Volunteering for Students
"The miracle is not that we do this work, but that we are happy to do it"-, states Mother Teresa. As a humanistic value, volunteerism is an activity which happens not for commercial purposes and it embraces cooperation among students in the public unions, projects, and local community. Although this expression was used in the Middle France when someone offered himself for military service disinterestedly in 1600, the number of the world's volunteers passes millions significantly in the 21ˢᵗ century. (Online Etymology Dictionary). Due to being widespread phenomena in all countries, the supporters of volunteer activity definitely argue volunteering work brings advantages such as emotional benefit and practical job opportunity; however, opponents claim entirely that personal conflicts cause negative circumstances among volunteers.
One of the first better-known benefits of volunteering is positive emotional feelings for students. Volunteering is the best way to interact new people, especially who feels depressive or lonely and it helps students in order to develop friendship network and expose common interests with teammates. According to the research in the U.S. study, 96 % of participants consider that volunteering "makes people happier" (Milaana, 2015). This fact indicates that volunteering keeps students in regular contact with others and helps them develop a solid support system, which protects against depression and stress. As a result, volunteers are inspired by their group-mates and improved by how their talents will benefit all around them. Moreover, volunteering gives students an opportunity in order to improve public speaking skills, since they are meeting regularly with a team of friends with common interests. The findings support the evidence of the overall review that volunteering work can develop young people's self-confidence and self-esteem, increase a range of communication skills, and improve their ability in order to work with other people. According to the surveys among young people, the proportion of communication skills is the second place with 155 votes after self-confidence ability in the volunteering work (The National Youth Agency). This statistic explains that volunteering activity causes increasing of the social interaction among students, close relationship strengthens a connection between individuals and community.
The second supportive argument for volunteering is practical job opportunity such as experience or internship. Naturally, a majority of students need a job after graduating from any university, and companies require volunteering skills in order to develop career opportunities. According to "Voices from the sector" surveys of the US organizations and job applicants, approximately 65 % of non-commercial managers consider that volunteering background should be proficient at least in order to select a candidate (2012). Due to being competitive job market, leaders of companies demand more skillful candidates, and they prefer collaborative and coordinative employers for successful choice; therefore, the most progressive volunteering timeline influences the choice of the candidate during a job interview. Moreover, volunteering work can help young people in order to make an effective resume. Consultant for career and job search Alison Green claims that human resources managers evaluate the student's volunteering last experiences (Green, 2012). This fact supports that if employers have strong volunteering abilities, they will manage challenges of the organization automatically; as a result, the overall productivity of the company will increase significantly.
In contrast, opponents assert that interpersonal conflicts have a negative effect for students during the volunteering activity. Due to being communal work, most students suffer from controversial situations among members of the group. In "Managing Conflict: A Guide for Volunteer Boards" E. Grant Macdonald, an associate professor of continuing education at Dalhousie University in Halifax, argues that students can face with difficult and stressful circumstances in the team, because emotions are always observed differently where problems and affairs are at the stake. In other words, charitable organizations need volunteers from different spheres of life, and students are forced in contact with persons whose characters does not fit others. As a result of diversification of the views, many argue that debatable situation causes interpersonal and intergroup conflicts during the decision-making process. Though it is true that disagreement among volunteers raises environmental stress; however, emotional benefits increases communication skills and it formulates cooperative and coordinative abilities of the student in order to establish a bridge between individual and the society. In addition, volunteering is a useful method both gaining experience before starting personal career building and providing the students with opportunities to explore job-related internships.
In conclusion, due to emotional benefits, students get a meaningful, positive effect from volunteering work and communication makes them feel happier connected to others. Furthermore, volunteering can assist students in order to get experience related to their occupation sphere and it gives the opportunity to practice important skills used in the workplace such as teamwork, communication, organization, problem-solving after graduating from the university for future ambitions. All considered, I firmly believe that volunteering is the best way in order to progress personality skills as well as career options for students.
